Winner 2011 Pacific Northwest Literary Contest - Adult Short Topic

Daniel Offer nee Thomas Edgar Hirsch, is a world-famous psychiatrist most known for his groundbreaking research and findings about adolescents. Once upon a time, he too, was a teenager. This is his true, uncommon coming-of-age story, as told decades later by his adult daughter

Born Jewish in Berlin in 1929, Thomas is among the fortunate few who escape Nazi Germany in 1936. His parents, Walter and Ilse, flee to Palestine with him in tow. While Walter and Ilse choose to leave Hitler's anti-semitism behind, they continue to cling to the bohemian movement and culture of free love, which they had enjoyed in Berlin. In the sleepy Middle Eastern town of Jerusalem, they throw memorable parties and pursue extra-marital lovers. Yet, they do not discuss the nature of their open arrangement with young Thomas or his two brothers.

Thomas's inevitable disillusionment of his parents’ fidelity and his discovery of additional shocking truths take place over the course of his adolescence amidst a historical backdrop that is singularly unique in time. It is a fascinating tale of his poignant journey from childhood to young adulthood.

My elderly parents were visiting when I started reading this essay and, knowing it would be a story they would love since they are of Tommy's generation, I decided to read the opening pages to them out loud. My voice started choking up by the second page and tears were rolling down my cheeks by the third page, floored by the realization of how the author's words coming out of my mouth were explicitly describing this current stage of my relationship with my aged parents. I can't wait to read more from this author & will make sure to have a box of tissues with me when I do.

Bohemia An Essay eBook Susan Offer Szafir Reviews

I really enjoyed this. It is well-written, intertwining facts from the past with the poignant moments of a bond between father and daughter. Well worth reading.
This must read short story truly captures a time in history when people lived passionately, while chaos was erupting all around. I could spend hours on end listening to stories about Tommy growing up in prewar Germany and relocating to the future state of Israel.
A very short piece that conveys so much. Grandparents and parents and war and changing times - and the threads within families that connect the generations. Beautiful.
Very interesting read about a time when most of us know so little. Engaging story, great details and colorful perspectives a must read for all to understand the region from a different viewpoint. Sue B.
Many of us with heritage dating back to this era in Germany wonder about the events of our grandparent's lives. To hear such a personal account of those times provides a reality that the history books often lack. I hope the author looks through the remaining albums with her father.
This essay is extraordinary -- for its writing, for its depiction of 1930's Jerusalem, and for the way it captures the emotions of the lives of its protagonists. The writing is almost cinematographic.
Unusual freedom of love, parties, secrets and lies, but at the same time a lot of tenderness and respect.
You should get this essay and put yourself in its bubble! I can not see a better way to spend and hour.
The Greeks said that literature should not only entertain but also pose (not answer, just pose) an ethical dilemma. Well, this essay does both; you will close your hoping for the author to write more about Tommy. You will finish and want to look once more at the face of the little boy in the cover. Read it first, and then pass it along to your partner. And be ready for a great conversation! Enjoy.
